I purchased a download version of the program but my computer crashed. Can I download it again?

  • Yes. Email Ron Paludan and include your name and email address.

What is the name of the install file?

  • rrmap3_setup.exe

How do I tell if I have the latest version?

  • Select "Help", then "About" from the menu. The latest version has a copyright date of 2007 and will display "Version 3.x" under the title.

    How many railroads are included?

  • Over 1200 current and past railroads listed!

I can't find the New Haven, Rock Island, etc., Where are these railroads?

  • Railroads are listed by their full names. For example, the "New Haven" is actually the New York, New Haven & Harford Railroad and the "Rock Island" is listed as the "Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railway"

Why does the map show railroad on the Ocean/Harbor/River?

  • In a few places this happens due to inaccuracies in the river, lake or coastal boundry files and in the railroad map data. With the 1:2,000,000 resolution that these separate databases were created from, the exact position of these lines relative to each other does not always align properly. In a few cases on the Great Lakes, there are lines that show former railroad car-ferry operations.

Can I use a map created by the program in a publication or web site?

  • Yes, but please include credit to Railway Station Productions, LLC. We would also appreciate a link to our web site: Railwaystation.com

Does North American Railroad map show abandoned railroads?

  • Yes. However, the program generally does not show railroads that were abandoned prior to approximately the late 1970's. This is because these lines were not included in the USGS data.

What do the traffic density numbers mean?

  • Railroad freight traffic density is measured in millions of gross tons per mile per year (MGT). Here, it is displayed as a number from 0-7:

0 - less than 1 megaton, no traffic, unknown or abandoned
    1 - 1.0 to 4.9 MGT
    2 - 5.0 to 9.9 MGT
    3 - 10.0 to 19.9 MGT
    4 - 20.0 to 39.9 MGT
    5 - 40.0 to 59.9 MGT
    6 - 60.0 to 99.9 MGT
    7 - Over 100 MGT

Where did you get the data?

  • Primary source of information was the USDOT Bureau of Transportation Statistics National Rail Network 1:2,000,000 from data compiled by then Federal Railroad Administration and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

Can I run the program off the CD?
